History Swaraj Tractors:
Swaraj tractors opened their doors for business at Durgapur, India, in 1965, and had gone through several reformations since then, as there were no major brands to compete with. Swaraj was gaining attention for its exceptional engineering and use of advanced technology. In 1970, the Punjab government acquired the swaraj brand through its subsidiary, Punjab Tractor Limited (PTL).
The Swaraj 724 was the first model introduced by PTL under its all-new initiation in 1974 with its 26.5 HP displacement engine.
In 25 years, PTL successfully formed a 1000 crore market capitalization by launching 7 tractor models with an inspiring tagline “Mera Swaraj”. The swaraj under PTL went downhill over time as the Punjab government sought to reduce its stake.
In 2007, Mahindra & Mahindra entered the story of swaraj tractors. After buying out the company, M&M acquired a majority stake. Swaraj was rebranded under M&M’s subsidiary after merging with the whole company.
From the past records of 6,000 units in the 1980s, Swaraj was able to sell 46,000 units in 2001 through the timeline above.
